Beginning Cluster (beg cluster):

  1. Ch 2.
  2. Yarn over, insert your hook into the designated space.
  3. Yarn over and pull up a loop. (You will have 3 loops on the hook.)
  4. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. (2 loops remain on the hook.)
  5. Yarn over, insert your hook into the same space.
  6. Yarn over and pull up a loop. (4 loops on the hook.)
  7. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. (3 loops remain on the hook.)
  8. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on the hook.

Cluster:

Pattern Instructions

Round 1: The Center

  1. Chain 3.
  2. Work 12 double crochet (dc) stitches into the 3rd chain from the hook. This forms a circle.
  3. Join the round with a slip stitch (sl st) into the very first dc you made. (12 dc)

Round 2: The Foundation

  1. Chain 1.
  2. Work 1 single crochet (sc) into the same stitch where you just joined.
  3. Chain 2.
  4. Skip the next dc and work 1 sc into the following dc.
  5. Chain 2.
  6. Repeat from * all the way around the circle. You should have a total of 12 sc and 12 ch-2 spaces.
  7. Join with a sl st to the first sc you made.

Round 3: Building the Frame

  1. Slip stitch into the first chain-2 space.
  2. In that same space, work (chain 4, 1 dc). The chain-4 counts as a dc plus a ch-1.
  3. Chain 1.
  4. *In the next chain-2 space, work (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc). This creates a “V” stitch group.
  5. Chain 1.
  6. Repeat from * into each chain-2 space around the circle.
  7. Join with a sl st to the 3rd chain of the beginning chain-4.

Round 4: Introducing Clusters

  1. Slip stitch into the first chain-1 space (this is the space right after your beginning chain-4).
  2. In this space, work (1 beginning cluster, ch 3, 1 cluster). This forms the first corner.
  3. *(Chain 2, work 1 sc in the next ch-1 space.) Repeat this (ch-2, sc) two times. You will have two sc with ch-2 spaces between them.
  4. Chain 2.
  5. In the next ch-1 space, work (1 cluster, ch 3, 1 cluster) to form another corner.
  6. Repeat from * two more times. You will have three sides done.
  7. For the final side: (ch 2, sc in the next ch-1 space) two times.
  8. Chain 2.
  9. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning cluster.

Round 5: Expanding the Square

  1. Slip stitch into the first chain-3 corner space.
  2. In this corner space, work (1 beginning cluster, ch 3, 1 cluster).
  3. *(Chain 2, work 1 dc in the next ch-2 space.) Repeat this (ch-2, dc) three times. You will have three dc with ch-2 spaces between them.
  4. Chain 2.
  5. In the next ch-3 corner space, work (1 cluster, ch 3, 1 cluster).
  6. Repeat from * two more times.
  7. For the final side: (ch 2, dc in the next ch-2 space) three times.
  8. Chain 2.
  9. Join with a sl st to the beginning cluster.

Round 6: The Final Granny Round

  1. Slip stitch into the first chain-3 corner space.
  2. In this corner space, work (1 beginning cluster, ch 3, 1 cluster).

  4. In the next space, work 2 dc.
  5. In the next dc stitch, work 1 dc.
  6. Repeat the pattern (2 dc in space, 1 dc in dc) three times. You will work across the side.

Round 7: The Smooth Edging

  1. Chain 1.
  2. Work 1 sc into the same stitch.
  3. Now, work single crochet in every stitch and space all the way around the square.
    • Work 2 sc in every chain-2 space.
    • Work 3 sc in every chain-3 corner space.
    • Work 1 sc in every dc stitch.
  4. When you get back to the start, join with a sl st to the first sc.
  5. Fasten off and weave in all your ends
