A Playful Monkey to Knit

Hello, my wonderful knitting friend! Today we are making something truly special – a beautiful and playful monkey with expressive eyes, wearing a cute green jumpsuit and hat.

This adorable monkey is knitted in stockinette stitch in the round on 4 double-pointed needles. The finished toy measures 18 cm from the top of the head to the bottom, and 32 cm from the top of the head to the heels.

The pattern was designed by Olga Morgunova and features a charming monkey with a lovely outfit. It is perfect for gifting or adding a fun touch to any collection.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Yarn: “Pekhorka. Prokhladnaya” (50% cotton, 50% viscose, 280m/100g)
    • 1 skein of chocolate color
    • 1 skein of milk color
    • Leftover green yarn
  • Knitting needles: Size 3 (US size 3 or 3.25mm)
  • Crochet hook: Size 3 (for finishing)
  • Stuffing: Polyester fiberfill or any preferred filling
  • Decorative eyes: For the face
  • Yarn needle: For sewing
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape

Gauge

26 stitches × 36 rows = 10 cm × 10 cm (4 inches × 4 inches) in stockinette stitch.

Main Pattern

Stockinette stitch: Knit all stitches in knit rows, purl all stitches in purl rows.

Body (Make 1)

Using chocolate color yarn and size 3 needles, cast on 12 stitches. Work 2 rows in stockinette stitch.

Row 3 (Increase row): Knit each stitch through the front loop, then through the back loop to the end of the row. (24 stitches)

Row 4: Work in stockinette stitch without changes.

Row 5 (Increase row): Knit 1, then increase (knit through front and back loop), repeat to end. (36 stitches)

Rows 6-8: Work in stockinette stitch without changes.

Row 9 (Increase row): Knit 1, increase, repeat to end. (48 stitches)

Rows 10-31: Work in stockinette stitch.

Row 32 (Decrease row – waistline): Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 1, repeat to end. (36 stitches)

Rows 33-60: Work in stockinette stitch.

Row 61 (Decrease row – chestline): Knit 4, knit 2 together, knit 7, knit 2 together, knit 2. Repeat this combination twice, then knit 2. (32 stitches)

Row 62: Work in stockinette stitch.

Row 63: Knit 4, knit 2 together with left slant, knit 5, knit 2 together, knit 2. Repeat twice, then knit 2. (28 stitches)

Row 64: Work in stockinette stitch.

Row 65: Knit 4, knit 2 together, knit 3, knit 2 together, knit 2. Repeat twice, then knit 2. (24 stitches)

Row 66: Work in stockinette stitch.

Row 67: Knit 4, knit 2 together, knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 2. Repeat twice, then knit 2. (20 stitches)

Row 68: Work in stockinette stitch.

Row 69: Knit 4, slip 1 stitch, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over, knit 2 together, knit 2. Repeat twice, then knit 2. (16 stitches)

Row 70: Purl all stitches. Bind off all stitches, cut yarn.

Head (Make 1)

Using chocolate color yarn and size 3 needles, cast on 12 stitches.

Row 1: Knit 1, increase (knit through front and back loop) 4 times, knit 2, increase 4 times. (20 stitches)

Row 2 and all even rows: Work in stockinette stitch.

Row 3: Knit 1, (increase, knit 1) 4 times, knit 2, (increase, knit 1) 4 times, knit 1. (28 stitches)

Rows 4-11: Work in stockinette stitch.

Row 12: Knit 6, increase, repeat twice, knit 12, increase, knit 6. (32 stitches)

Row 14: Knit 6, (increase, knit 1) twice, knit 12, (increase, knit 1) twice, knit 6. (36 stitches)

Row 16: Knit 7, (increase, knit 2) twice, knit 12, (increase, knit 2) twice, knit 5. (40 stitches)

Row 18: Knit 7, (increase, knit 3) twice, knit 12, (increase, knit 3) twice, knit 5. (44 stitches)

Row 20: Knit 8, (increase, knit 4) twice, knit 12, (increase, knit 4) twice, knit 4. (48 stitches)

Row 22 (Decrease row): (Knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 1) repeat to end. (36 stitches)

Rows 23-25: Work in stockinette stitch.

Row 26: (Knit 1, knit 2 together) repeat to end. (24 stitches)

Row 27: Work in stockinette stitch.

Row 28: Knit 2 together to end. (12 stitches)

Bind off all stitches, cut yarn, and secure.

Face (Make 1)

Using milk color yarn and size 3 needles, cast on 10 stitches. Work 4 rows in stockinette stitch.

Row 5: Increase 1 stitch at the beginning and end of the row (knit through front and back loop).

Rows 6-8: Work in stockinette stitch.

Repeat rows 5-8 once more. (14 stitches)

Then decrease 1 stitch at the beginning and end of the row (knit 2 together). (10 stitches)

Bind off all stitches, cut yarn, and secure.

Muzzle (Make 1)

Using milk color yarn, cast on 32 stitches.

Row 1: Knit 1, (knit 1, knit 2 together) repeat to last stitch, knit 1. (22 stitches)

Row 2 and all even rows: Purl all stitches.

Row 3: Knit 1, (knit 1, knit 2 together) repeat to last stitch, knit 1. (15 stitches)

Row 5: Knit 1, (knit 1, knit 2 together) repeat to last stitch, knit 1. (10 stitches)

Row 7: Knit 1, (knit 1, knit 2 together) repeat to last stitch, knit 1. (7 stitches)

Cut yarn, thread through remaining stitches, pull tight, and secure.

Ears (Make 2)

Using light color yarn, cast on 7 stitches. Work 2 rows in stockinette stitch.

Row 3: Increase in every stitch. (12 stitches)

Rows 4-6: Work in stockinette stitch.

Rows 7-8: Knit all stitches.

Row 9: Knit 2 together to end. (7 stitches)

Cut yarn, thread through stitches, pull tight, and secure
