Pehoe Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern Instructions
This beautiful blanket is built using the reversible and textured Boxed Block Stitch. We will first learn the stitch and then apply it to create the main body of the blanket.
How to Crochet the Boxed Block Stitch
This stitch pattern is worked over a multiple of 4 + 2 chains and uses two colors. For this pattern, Color A is the grey pearl yarn, and Color B is the white yarn.

Foundation Chain & Row 1 (Color A)
Foundation Chain: With Color A (grey pearl), chain a multiple of 4, then add 2 more chains.
Row 1: Work 1 dc in the 4th ch from the hook and in each chain across. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of the row to keep track of your sides.

Row 2 (Color B)
Join Color B (white) yarn on the same side where you began Row 1.
Row 2: Ch 1, work 1 sc in the first st, ch 4, skip the next 3 sts. *Work 1 sc in the space between dc stitches, ch 4, skip the next 4 sts*. Repeat from * to * across the row. You will create loops of chain-4 spaces separated by single crochets. Finish with 1 sc in the last stitch of the row. Place a marker.

Row 3 (Color A)
Return to the beginning of the row and pick up Color A.
Row 3: Ch 3 (or use a false double crochet for a cleaner edge). Work 4 dc in each ch-4 space across the row. Place a marker.
Row 4 (Color B)
Return to the beginning of the row and pick up Color B.
Row 4: Ch 1, 1 sc in the first st, ch 4, skip 3 sts. *Work 1 sc in the space between the 4-dc blocks, ch 4, skip 4 sts*. Repeat from * to * across. Finish with 1 sc in the last stitch. Place a marker.
Continue repeating Rows 3 and 4 until you reach your desired length.
Crocheting the Blanket Body
- With your grey pearl yarn (Color A), make a foundation chain of 170 stitches.
- Follow the instructions for the Boxed Block Stitch, alternating between grey pearl (Color A) and white (Color B) as established.
- Continue repeating the pattern (Rows 3 & 4) until your blanket measures approximately 30 inches or your desired length.
- Finish your last row with Color A (a double crochet row, like Row 3). Do not fasten off.
Assembly and Finishing
Crocheting the Border
- Using the white yarn (Color B), work in single crochet evenly around the entire blanket. Place 3 sc in each corner to keep it flat.
- Continue working in the round, completing a total of 4 rounds of single crochet with the white yarn.
- For the final round, switch to the grey pearl yarn (Color A) and crochet one last round of single crochet.
Adding Tassels
- Create four tassels using the grey pearl yarn.
- Using your tapestry needle, securely attach one tassel to each of the four corners of the blanket.
- For a decorative touch, thread three white beads onto the yarn used to attach each tassel.
Final Touches
Weave in all loose ends securely with your tapestry needle. It is recommended to block your blanket to even out the stitches and give it a professional, finished shape.
Pattern Notes and Tips
- Custom Sizing: To change the blanket’s width, simply make your foundation chain in any multiple of 4, then add 2 extra chains.
- Scrap Yarn Project: For a more colorful and unique blanket, use different scrap yarns of the same fingering weight instead of the solid grey pearl yarn.
- Alternative Yarn: This pattern also looks wonderful in different yarn weights. The blanket pictured below was made with DK weight yarn and a 5.0mm crochet hook for a smaller, thicker result.
