Approximately 9″ wide x 8″ tall (excluding head, tail, and legs).

Gauge:

7 single crochet (sc) stitches and 8 rows = 4 inches.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Super Bulky Weight Yarn (Category 6):
    • Approximately 200 yards (183 meters) in an Aran color (for the main body of the sheep).
    • Approximately 29 yards (26.5 meters) in a contrasting color (like black, for the face and tail).
    • Approximately 46 yards (50 meters) in a coordinating color (like blue or green, for the bag strap).
  • Crochet Hook: US M/N-13 (9 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Yarn Needle.
  • 9-inch (23 cm) closed-end zipper in a natural color.
  • Polyfil stuffing.

Getting Started: The Body of Your Sheep Bag

Notes:

2nd rnd: (WS) Ch 3. Popcorn in the first dc. (1 dc, Popcorn) in each of the next 3 dc. (1 dc in the next dc, Popcorn in the next dc) 3 times. (1 dc, Popcorn) in each of the next 6 dc. (1 dc in the next dc, Popcorn in the next dc) 3 times. (1 dc, Popcorn) in each of the last 2 dc. Join. Turn. (36 sts)

3rd rnd: (RS) Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch). Popcorn in the same space as the sl st. *1 dc in the next stitch. Popcorn in the next stitch. Rep from * to the last stitch. 1 dc in the last stitch. Join. Turn.

4th row: (WS) Ch 3. *Popcorn in the next stitch. 1 dc in the next stitch. Rep from * to the last stitch. Popcorn in the last stitch. Do not join. Turn.

Repeat the 4th row until the Body measures approximately 8 inches [20.5 cm] from the beginning.

Next rnd: Ch 3. *Popcorn in the next stitch. 1 dc in the next stitch. Rep from * to the last stitch. Popcorn in the last stitch. Join. Turn.

Next rnd: Ch 2. 1 dc in the next stitch counts as your first dc2tog. (Dc2tog) twice. 1 dc in each of the next 6 stitches. (Dc2tog) 6 times. 1 dc in each of the next 6 stitches. (Dc2tog) 3 times. Join. (24 sts)

Fasten off. Lay the Body flat. Using your sewing thread and needle, sew the zipper into the top edge of the Body within the edges of the last round.

Crafting the Little Details: Legs, Head, and Ears

Legs (Make 2 alike)

Using contrasting color yarn (Contrast B):

Ch 2.

1st rnd: 6 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook. Join. (6 sc)

2nd to 5th rnds: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join.

Fasten off.

Stuff the legs lightly and sew them to the bottom of the Body, as shown in the project photo.

Head

Using contrasting color yarn (Contrast B):

Ch 2.

1st rnd: 6 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook. Join. (6 sc)

2nd rnd: Ch 1. 2 sc in each sc around. Join. (12 sc)

3rd rnd: Ch 1. *1 sc in the next sc. 2 sc in the next sc. Rep from * around. Join. (18 sc)

4th to 8th rnds: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join.

Fasten off at the end of the last round.

Right Ear

Using contrasting color yarn (Contrast B):

Ch 4.

1st row: 1 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook. 1 sc in the next chain. 3 sc in the last chain. Working into the opposite side of the foundation chain, 1 sl st in each of the next 2 chains.

Fasten off.

Left Ear

Using contrasting color yarn (Contrast B):

Ch 4.

Fasten off.

Sew the ears to each side of the Head as shown in the project photo.

Stuff the Head lightly. Position the Head in the opening at the front end of the Body and sew it in place, essentially sandwiching the opening of the bag.

Creating the Bag Strap

Using coordinating color yarn (Contrast C):

Ch 12. Join with a sl st to the first chain to form a ring, making sure not to twist the chain.

1st rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each chain around. Join. (12 sc)

2nd rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join.

Repeat the 2nd rnd until the strap measures approximately 15 inches [38 cm] from the beginning.

Fasten off.

Final Assembly: Attaching the Strap

Sew the strap to the Body of the bag. Fold the ends of the strap in half and secure them to the top corners of the Body where the zipper begins and ends, as shown in the project photo.
