Trinity Stitch Drawstring Bag Pattern

Materials

  • 6mm/J crochet hook (or one size larger than your usual size to meet gauge)

  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations

This pattern uses US crochet terminology.

  • ch: Chain
  • sl st: Slip stitch
  • sc: Single crochet
  • inc: Single crochet increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
  • hdc: Half double crochet
  • st(s): Stitch(es)
  • flo: Front loop only
  • ch sp: Chain space
  • rd(s): Round(s)
  • […]: Repeated group of stitches

Special Stitch: Trinity Stitch

The Trinity Stitch is essentially a single crochet three together (sc3tog) worked into the same stitch you just finished, plus the next two stitches. After completing the sc3tog, you will chain one (except for the last stitch of the round).

When working into a row of trinity stitches from the previous round, the first and third loops of your new stitch will go through both loops of the chain stitches from that round.

Gauge and Sizing

Gauge is not critical for this project. The final bag will be slightly wider than the base. As written, the finished bag measures:

  • Base Diameter: Approximately 5.5 inches (14 cm) after round 8.
  • Bag Width: Approximately 7 inches (18 cm).
  • Bag Height: Approximately 9.5 inches (24 cm) tall, with the drawstring positioned at 8 inches (20 cm).

If you adjust the number of rounds in the base, remember to add an extra increase in the final round to ensure you have an odd number of stitches for the body. If you change the bag’s height, begin the drawstring hole section (round 34) on an odd-numbered round.

Pattern Notes

  • The total stitch count for each round is in parentheses.
  • The bag base (rds 1-8) is worked in a continuous spiral.
  • The main body (trinity stitch section) is worked in joined rounds, turning your work after each round. Even-numbered rounds are worked from the inside, and odd-numbered rounds from the outside. The ch 1 at the beginning of these rounds does not count as a stitch.
  • The drawstring channel is worked in a continuous spiral.
  • If round 9 is difficult, you can skip it and work round 10 directly into the back loops of round 8.
  • Do not place a chain between the starting/ending sc stitches and the first/last trinity stitches on each body round.

  4. Rounds 36-39: Repeat the instructions for round 11. At the end of round 39, join with a sl st and fasten off.

Drawstring Instructions

Chain to your desired length. The chain should be long enough to weave through the eyelet holes of round 34 and tie comfortably. For the bag pictured, chain 121.

Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, sl st into BOTH LOOPS of each chain back to the beginning. Fasten off.

Note: This method can be slow. Alternatively, you can slip stitch into the back bump of the chain, braid several strands of yarn together, or create a knitted i-cord.

Assembly and Finishing

  1. Weave in all your ends securely using a tapestry needle.
  2. Starting on the side of the bag opposite from your round seams, weave the drawstring in and out through the eyelet holes created in round 34.
  3. Pull to cinch the bag closed and tie in a bow or knot
