Springtime Dishcloth: A Quick & Easy Crochet Pattern for Beginners

Springtime Dishcloth: A Quick & Easy Crochet Pattern for Beginners

June 25, 2025

Looking for a quick and practical crochet project? This Springtime Dishcloth is the perfect little make! At 9 inches square, it’s an ideal size for washing dishes, wiping counters, or even as a cute mini hand towel. Plus, the hanging loop makes it easy to store!

This pattern is great for beginners because it uses just basic stitches (half double crochet and chains) in a simple, repetitive design. And since it works up super fast, you can make a whole stack in different colors to match your kitchen decor—or give as thoughtful handmade gifts!

Why You’ll Love This Pattern:
✔ Takes less than one ball of yarn – Affordable and stash-friendly!
✔ Works up in under an hour – Instant gratification!
✔ Customizable colors – Use solid or variegated yarn for different looks.
✔ Perfect for practicing tension – Great for new crocheters!

Ready to get started? Let’s gather your supplies

Springtime Dishcloth: A Quick & Easy Crochet Pattern for Beginners

Materials

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Yarn:1 ball of Sugar’n Cream (or any worsted-weight cotton yarn)
    • Size: 2.5 oz / 70g (120 yds / 109m)
    • Color: Any! (Solid or variegated both work great.)
  • Hook: *Size H-8 (5.0 mm)* (or size needed to match gauge)
  • Scissors & tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)

Gauge & Size

  • Gauge: *13 sc and 14 rows = 4″ (10 cm)*
  • Finished Size: 9″ (23 cm) square

Pro Tip: If your gauge is off, try adjusting your hook size—a smaller hook makes tighter stitches, while a larger one makes looser stitches.

Stitch Guide (Abbreviations)

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • V-st: (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in same stitch

🧵 Step-by-Step Instructions

Foundation & Main Body

  1. Start: Chain 36.
  2. Row 1 (Right Side):
    • Make a V-st (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in the 4th chain from the hook (the first 3 skipped chains count as your first hdc + ch-1).
    • *Skip the next 2 chains, then make another V-st in the next chain.*
    • Repeat this pattern (skip 2, V-st in next) across the row until you have 2 chains left.
    • Skip the next chain, then make 1 hdc in the last chain.
    • *You should have 11 V-sts total.*
    • Turn your work.
  3. Row 2:
    • Chain 2 (counts as first hdc).
    • *Make a V-st in the ch-1 space of each V-st from the row below.*
    • End with 1 hdc in the 2nd chain of the turning chain from the previous row.
    • Turn.
  4. Row 3:
    • Chain 2, then make a V-st in each V-st across.
    • End with 1 hdc in the last hdc.
    • Turn.
  5. Repeat Row 3 until your dishcloth measures 9 inches (23 cm) long, ending on a right-side row.

🌿 Adding the Hanging Loop

  1. Do NOT fasten off after the last row.
  2. Chain 16 to create the loop.
  3. Slip stitch into the next hdc to secure.
  4. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Tips for Success

  • Keep stitches loose for better absorbency (cotton yarn stretches when wet!).
  • Use stitch markers to track your V-sts if needed.
  • Try variegated yarn for a fun, colorful look without changing colors

Final Thoughts

This Springtime Dishcloth is a fantastic stash-buster project—you can make a whole set in an afternoon! They’re practical, pretty, and perfect for gifting (tie a few together with a ribbon for a sweet handmade present).
