Pompon (Orange)

Create a small orange pompon for the hat.

  1. 6 sc in a MR [6]
  2. inc in all 6 st [12]
  3. (sc, inc) x 6 [18]
  4. -6: (3 rounds) sc in all 18 st [18]
  5. (sc, dec) x 6 [12]

Stuff the pompon with fiberfill.

Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail. Using a yarn needle, weave the yarn tail through the back loop of each remaining stitch and pull it tight to close. Weave in the yarn end.

Hat (Blue)

The hat is crocheted onto the pompon. Go back to round 8 of the pompon. Pull up a loop of blue yarn in the first leftover front loop and begin crocheting the hat, working in the FLO of the pompon’s last round.

  11. ch1, turn your work. Skip the turning chain and continue working in rounds in the opposite direction: 4 sc, (inc, 8 sc) x 5, inc, 4 sc [60]
  12. -19: (2 rounds) sc in all 60 st [60]

Slst in the next stitch. Fasten off and weave in the yarn end. To finish the hat, roll up the last 3 rounds to create a brim.

Assembly and Finishing Touches

Now it’s time to bring all your crocheted pieces together to create Lily the Bird!

  • Attach Wings: Using baby blue yarn, sew the wings securely between rounds 12 and 21 of the body and head, ensuring an interspace of approximately 6 stitches between them.
  • Attach Beak: Sew the yellow beak to the center of the face, between rounds 21 and 25 of the body and head.
  • Attach Tail: Sew the off-white tail to the bird’s back, in the middle, between rounds 7 and 10 of the body and head.
  • Attach Legs: Sew the orange legs to the body between rounds 5 and 8. The clever design allows the bird to sit on its own using its tail and legs for stability.
  • Embroider Cheeks: If you’re not using glass eyes, or for an added touch, embroider small rosy cheeks below the eyes using pink yarn.
  • Embroider Hat: Use scraps of yellow yarn to embroider decorative French knots on the blue hat, adding a playful detail.
