Crochet Flip Flop Coaster Pattern

Notes Before You Start

  • This pattern is worked in joined rounds.
  • The beginning chain (Ch 1 or Ch 2) at the start of each round does not count as a stitch.
  • Always join the round with a slip stitch into the very first stitch of that round, not the beginning chain.
  • The number in brackets at the end of each round, like (30 sts), is your total stitch count for that round.

Flip Flop Sole Instructions

Using your main sole color (e.g., Blue):

Round 1

Ch 12. Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 1 HDC in the next 10 chains. In the very last chain, make 5 HDC (this will curve your work around the end). Now, working along the opposite side of the starting chain, make 1 HDC in the next 9 stitches. In the final stitch (which was the first chain you skipped), make 6 HDC. Join with a sl st to the first HDC of the round. (30 sts)

Round 2

Ch 1. Make 1 HDC in each of the next 10 sts. Make 2 HDC (an increase) in each of the next 5 sts. Continue with 1 HDC in each of the next 10 sts. Finish by making 2 HDC in each of the last 5 sts. Join with a sl st. (40 sts)

Round 3

Ch 1. Make 1 HDC in each of the next 10 sts. Now, repeat the sequence [2 HDC in the next st, 1 HDC in the following st] a total of 5 times over the next 10 sts. Next, make 1 HDC in each of the next 10 sts. Finish by repeating [2 HDC in the next st, 1 HDC in the following st] 5 times over the last 10 sts. Join with a sl st. (50 sts)

Round 4

Ch 1. Make 1 SC in each of the next 10 sts. Repeat the sequence [1 SC in the next 2 sts, 2 SC in the next st] a total of 5 times over the next 15 sts. Next, make 1 SC in each of the next 10 sts. Finish by repeating [1 SC in the next 2 sts, 2 SC in the next st] 5 times over the last 15 sts. Join with a sl st. (60 sts)

Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Flip Flop Strap Instructions (Make 2)

Using your accent color (e.g., Purple):

Row 1

Ch 15. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

A simple crochet chain that will be used as the flip flop strap.

Assembly and Finishing

  1. Take one of the crocheted straps (the chain of 15). Use your yarn needle to sew one end of the strap to the top side of the flip flop sole.
  2. Sew the other end of the same strap to the opposite side of the sole, creating the top part of the “V” shape.
  3. Take your second strap and position it to create the “V” shape of the flip flop thong. Sew it securely in place, anchoring it between the first and second toes of the coaster and attaching the ends near where the first strap is secured.
  4. Use your yarn needle to weave in all remaining ends securely for a clean, finished look.

Tips for Beginners

  • Use a Stitch Marker: Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round. This will help you easily identify where to place your slip stitch to join the round and prevent you from losing your place.
  • Count Your Stitches: After completing each round, take a moment to count your stitches. Making sure your count matches the number in the pattern will help you catch any mistakes early on.
  • Consistent Tension: Try to keep your yarn tension consistent as you crochet. This will ensure your coaster lies flat and has a uniform look. If your edges are curling up, your tension might be too tight.
