Pattern Instructions

The Front and Back Panels (Make 2)

The Base:

  • Foundation: Chain 40.
  • Row 1 (RS): Work 2 hdc in the 2nd chain from the hook. Work 1 hdc in each chain until the last chain. Work 2 hdc in the last chain. Turn. (40 hdc).
  • Next 6 Rows: Chain 2. Work 2 hdc in the first hdc. Work 1 hdc in each hdc until the last stitch. Work 2 hdc in the last hdc. Turn. By the end of the 6th row, you should have 52 hdc.

The Body:

  • Next Row: Chain 2. Work 1 hdc in each hdc across to the end of the row. Turn.
  • Repeat: Repeat the previous row until the piece measures 10 inches from the start, ending with a Wrong Side (WS) row.

Shaping the Strap:

  • Next Row (RS): Chain 2. Work 1 hdc in each of the next 17 hdc. Work a hdc2tog (half double crochet two together) twice. Turn. Leave the remaining stitches unworked. (18 sts).
  • Next Row: Chain 2. Work hdc2tog over the first 2 stitches. Work 1 hdc in each hdc to the end of the row. Turn.
  • Next Row: Chain 2. Work 1 hdc in each hdc until the last 2 stitches. Work hdc2tog over the last 2 stitches. Turn.
  • Repeat: Repeat the last 2 rows once more. (14 sts).
  • Next 3 Rows: Chain 2. Work 1 hdc in each hdc across to the end of the row. Turn.
  • Next Row: Chain 2. Work hdc2tog over the first 2 stitches. Work 1 hdc in each hdc to the end of the row. Turn.
  • Repeat: Repeat the last 4 rows 7 more times. (6 sts).
  • Next Row: Chain 2. Work 1 hdc in each hdc across to the end of the row. Turn.
  • Final Stretch: Repeat the last row until the strap measures 16 inches in total. End with a WS row and fasten off.

Second Panel: With the WS of the work facing, join yarn with a slip stitch to the first stitch. Work the pattern from the “Shaping the Strap” section as written above, noting that the Right Side (RS) now becomes the Wrong Side (WS).

Finishing the Bag

Assembly

Place the Front and Back panels together with the Wrong Sides facing inward. Sew the bottom and side seams together, continuing the seam up to the top of the straps.

The Decorative Flap

  • Foundation: Chain 17.
  • Row 1 (RS): Work 1 hdc in the 2nd chain from the hook. Work 1 hdc in each chain to the end. (15 hdc).
  • Next Row: Chain 2. Work 1 hdc in each hdc across to the end of the row. Turn.
  • Repeat: Repeat the last row until the flap measures 6 inches, ending with a WS row.
  • Attachment: Fold 3/4 inch of the flap around the plastic ring and sew it securely in position. Sew the remainder of the flap to the back of the bag.

Adding the Fringe

Cut lengths of yarn approximately 5 inches long. Take two strands together and knot them into the area around the plastic ring to create a fringe. Trim the fringe evenly for a clean, professional look.
